Proposals

When first getting this project we were told to do a minimum of two proposals of things which our projects could be based on. It took me a while to think of two things which I thought would work best but I eventually came up with one on architecture and one on shutter speeds. These are my two original proposals for this project, I ended up using the second one and doing about shutter speeds.

      Proposal 1 (arc)

For directions within photographic communication the outcome of this project/brief will be to put a book together of my own work which I have chosen to do and what I think will work well in the book.
I have decided to choose architecture as the subject of my book because this is something i’ve always been interested in but never had the chance to do something more with it. I have experimented with photos before involving architecture and enjoyed it so I thought that this would be a good theme to choose.
My aim for this book is to take images around the city of Manchester of modern and old buildings and architecture, looking at the difference between them and how they have changed and how we have changed our designs of buildings over the years and the differences between them. I feel that this would work really well within a book either going from the older buildings to newer ones to show the changes of how we have buildings now, compared to how they used to be or just having all the images together as a collection of architecture within our city.
The audience for this work would be for people to see it and be able to purchase it within a gallery shop or museum shop. I feel that these would be the best places to have it and people would appreciate it in either the gallery shop to view it as art work or a museum shop to view it as history showing the way we have developed our buildings through out time.
To create the images I plan on taking I have decided to go in and around the city of Manchester making it more personal being my own city. I want to take these images in the day time, not night because I want people to be able to see the detail of the buildings and architecture and I wouldn’t be able to show this very well if I took images at night time.
I will look at the historical buildings of Manchester such as the Midland hotel and the Manchester Cathedral and the modern buildings such as the newly created Media City in Salford and the new shopping areas in the centre of Manchester. Following the bombing of Manchester by the IRA, the city has been able to recreate itself. I would like to show this in my images. This I feel would make a good book of historical interest.
To take the images for this book i’m going to use a Nikon D3100 camera and a tripod. The tripod will be very important so I can make sure the angles of the buildings will be straight in my images and so I can create the best possible images I can. I have researched for this topic by looking at ‘the city‘ part in Susan Bright’s ‘Photography Now‘ book. This has helped me with my idea a lot. I feel like this would be an interesting project to do.

Here's some of my initial images that I took before I decided which I was going to do so that I could get a feel of where my project would be going.

Proposal 2 (shutter speed)

In directions within photographic communication the subject for this brief I have chosen  is shutter speeds. I will be showing my images in a book I will create and this will be the outcome of the project.
The way I have decided to show shutter speeds is through showing liquids taken with a fast shutter speed to freeze the action of what is happening showing different coloured liquids mixing together creating unique and interesting shapes. I have always loved working with different shutter speeds and its something that really interests me. I am always experimenting with shooting things at different speeds and have tried experimenting with this particular subject I want to do and found it worked really well.
The aim for me for this book is to take images of different coloured ink into water capturing the way the ink and water merge together and the different shapes it creates. I think that this idea will work really well in a book showing all the different shapes and patterns that can be created and captured.
The audience for this work will be for people to see it and be able to purchase it within a gallery shop. I think this would be the best place to have the book and people would appreciate it there.
To create the image I plan on taking I have decided to do it in a studio set up environment using a tank of liquid and different coloured inks to create the effect i’m looking for. I will use a Nikon D3100 with a Macro lens so I can really get close to whats happening within the image. I’m going to try a mixture of different coloured inks to see which works best and also try mixing the colours.
When researching for this brief I looked at photographers such as Harold Edgerton, Mark Mawson and Eadweard Muybridge. The reason I decided to look and research these photographers is because they do a lot of work that is based on shutter speeds, showing something froze in action. They show something the naked eye couldn’t see on its own which I find really fascinating and interesting. Instead of copying something any of these photographers have done exactly I have decided to try something abit different that I think will show this technique really well.
This kind of photography is something that I really enjoy doing and would like to learn more about it and I feel this project will help me do that and would be an interesting project  to do and i would really enjoy doing it.

Here's some of my initial images that I took before I decided which I was going to do so that I could get a feel of where my project would be going.

I decided to do my project on the second one because I felt that with the architecture one a lot of people had done about it before and I felt i'd need to think of a new way to show architecture within my pictures for it to be interesting enough. Whereas the shutter speed one I felt I could do a lot more with it and make it more interesting.
